PPSSPP Emulator is now finally available on IOS App Store

PPSSPP Emulator Launches in iOS App Store, Bringing PSP Gaming to iPhone, iPad Users

I can’t believe it happened, but PPSSPP is now on the App Store. The announcement post mentions how this has taken nearly 12 years, and after Apple relaxed its policies for emulation, we finally have the most popular PSP emulator now on iOS. There are a few things to keep in mind though with the limitations in the launch build. Vulkan support through MoltenVK isn’t enabled right now. Magic Keyboard on iPad is also not currently supported. JIT recompiler isn’t supported yet either, and the final bit of bad news is RetorAchievement support has been temporarily disabled. I’m not sure what games will be affected most by the lack of JIT, but this is still huge progress for emulation on iOS.

The official announcement mentions how MoltenVK will be re-enabled and even native Metal support might be considered. JIT compiler will not happen until Apple changes its own rules. The Magic Keyboard for iPad will be supported at some point through another method with RetroAchievements arriving with a better login in the future. If you’d like to get PPSSPP, you can grab it free on the App Store for iOS here. A paid GOLD version to support development (assuming it is the same as the Android version) should go up here. What are you going to play first on the emulator if you grab it today and what would you like to see added to it in the future?

Today marks the introduction of PPSSPP to the iOS App Store, bringing PSP emulation to iPhones and iPads. Developed by Henrik Rydgård over a decade ago, this emulator allows users to experience PlayStation Portable games on their iOS devices, all for free.

Launching PPSSPP on iOS App Store

In a significant development for gaming enthusiasts, the PPSSPP emulator has officially landed on the iOS App Store, making PlayStation Portable (PSP) emulation accessible to iPhone and iPad users.

Developed by Henrik Rydgård over a decade ago, this emulator is now readily available for download. It allows users to play their favorite PSP titles on their iOS devices at no cost.

Rydgård highlighted the milestone in a recent blog post, acknowledging that while the approved version has certain limitations compared to earlier iterations, it represents a significant step forward for iOS gamers.

This acknowledgment reflects the culmination of years of development and efforts to bring PSP emulation to the iOS platform, signaling a promising new chapter in the realm of mobile gaming.

One notable constraint is Apple's prohibition on Just-in-Time recompilers, a key component for code translation and performance enhancement.

Despite this setback, Rydgård expressed optimism, affirming that iOS devices generally possess the processing power needed to handle most PSP games smoothly.

The introduction of PPSSPP to the iOS platform heralds a significant milestone for the gaming community, presenting them with an exciting opportunity to delve into a rich assortment of PSP titles directly from their iPhones and iPads.

This much-anticipated debut of PPSSPP has ignited a palpable sense of enthusiasm within the iOS gaming community, poised to deliver countless hours of immersive gameplay and evoke nostalgic sentiments among loyal fans of the iconic PSP console.

Offerings, Compatibility
PPSSPP offers a compelling lineup of games, including titles like Valkyria Chronicles II, Patapon, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

Not forgetting Lumines, which also deserves recognition. While many of these games were eventually released on other gaming platforms, they still showcase the diverse range of experiences available on the PSP system.

PPSSPP is compatible with iOS 12 and higher, as well as iPadOS 12 and above, and is also accessible on the Vision Pro.

While the app's initial download is free, developer Henrik Rydgård has disclosed that a paid version will soon be available for $4.99.

Although similar to the existing free version, the paid edition is intended to offer users a means to support Rydgård's ongoing development efforts.
